Gaeltacht 2013-Mobile

6th class have been in the Donegal Gaeltacht this week. Here are some photos:

We had a busy week with lots of fun and more sunshine than we expected. We went to Arranmore Island, Dunluey, and Carrickfin beach as well as having a talent show and plenty of céile dancing. We learned some Gaeilge along the way too…!

Trip to The Ark in Temple Bar

3rd and 6th class went on to see ‘Hands Up for Haiti’, a show put on by clowns to highlight the good use that fundraising money has been put to.

We saw footage of the town of ‘Port-au-Prince’, the capital city of Haiti, which was left devastated after an earthquake on the 12th of January 2012. The massive earthquake of 7.0 magnitude was followed by 2 aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude.

Thanks to Irish fundraising they have managed to rebuild some schools, using old furniture from Irish schools.

It was a great day out and 3rd and 6th class impressed lots of passengers on the bus with their manners and behaviour.

A good day all round!

World Book Day in 5th Class

5th class read with junior infants and senior infants in preparation for world book day. Everybody really enjoyed themselves as 5th class read some great books from the library and the infants were introduced to just a few of the many fantastic stories out there!

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Bhí rang a cúig agus rang a trí ag caint as Gaeilge le chéile i rith seachtain na Gaeilge. 5th class and 3rd class were talking Irish together during Irish week. Both classes learned a lot from their experience. 5th class helped 3rd class to learn new Irish phrases. At the end of the week the two classes wrote a short story together as Gaeilge using all the phrases they had been practicing during the week.

5th class have been learning all about the ecosystem of a bog. In groups we made models of raised bogs in bottles.We learned all about flora and fauna in these bogs and we

illustrated many food chains which can be seen there. 5th class chose their favourite flora and fauna which can be found in a bog and illustrated it using fabric crayons. These pictures were then ironed onto material and 5th class used them to sew fantastic cushions. Have a look at our creative work!

Hydroelectric Power

5th class were learning all about Hydroelectric Power and how it works as a renewable energy. We decided to try an experiment to see if we could make a model of Hydroelectric Power to see how it works. Each group in 5th class was given an empty plastic bottle, a scissors, a ball of blue tack, a basin, a wooden bbq skewer and a jug of water. They had to work as a group to try and figure out how they could make a model of hydroelectric power successfully. Two out of the six groups succeeded! However we decided as a class that one model was more efficient and effective as it spun faster and did not fall apart. Well done 5th class you are great scientists and fantastic

problem solvers.

Dress up for World Book Day

5th class dressed up as some of their favourite characters from many much loved books. We had visits from cowgirls, babies, Luna and Dobby from Harry Potter , and many more other exciting characters in our classroom for World Book Day. It was a great day!
