An Active Maths Lesson

The blocks we used have 4 attributes; size, colour, thickness and shape.  The challenge was to put them in a line changing just one attribute each time.  Look how we got on!

3rd and 4th Class Take Part in S.T.E.M Challenges and Cooperative Games!

3rd and 4th had to put their heads together to work out some S.T.E.M (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) challenges. Each group were given 10 cups, cotton wool, string, some straws and a lego figure. They had to work out the best way to stack the cups into a pyramid shape with the lego figure on top, without their hands touching the cups and the lego figure.

They also took part in some team games out in the yard.

The Giant Jam Sandwich

Junior Infants have loved the story, ‘The Giant Jam Sandwich’. It is the tale of a town called Itching Down that gets invaded by a swarm of 4 million wasps! The villagers work together to make a giant jam sandwich to trap the wasps- what a great idea. We sequenced the story and wrote about what happened at the beginning, middle and end. We tasted 3 different flavours of jam and ranked them in order of our favourite. The best part of all was when we made jam sandwiches, spreading and cutting them ourselves. Our classroom was pretty sticky when we were done, but it was worth it.
